Two weeks ago we mentioned that Ryan Mallett would be visiting Jon Gruden and taping an episode of QB Camp. The show airs on ESPN before the draft and features Gruden talking to the top QB prospects. Gruden will hammer the guys with questions about attitude, play calling and execution. The show allows fans to see how these guys process plays and their understanding of the quarterback position. Gruden will play some game film and have the player break certain plays down. While watching the plays, Gruden’s goal is to find out what they were thinking or why they reacted a certain way.
ESPN has added a new wrinkle to the mix this year by allowing the players to do some “on the field work“. This should be good news for Mallett. Any time he has a chance to show off that cannon he calls an arm, is a definite chance to impress somebody. Arm strength may be the easiest quality for common fans to understand. Your common fan isn’t going to notice much of a difference between players’ footwork but it is easy to see who throws a ball farther and with velocity.
Ryan’s agent, J.R. Carroll, was able to give us a few interesting details of the taping/workout.
- Ryan was not given the questions prior to sitting down with Gruden.
- No question was off limit.
- As stated above, there was some on the field work with Gruden.
- Ryan would love to play for Gruden.
- Confident Mallett’s draft stock will rise after the show airs.
Overall we got the feeling from Carroll that the taping went very well, and this should have a positive impact for Ryan. He even had this to say:
“All of the feedback from ESPN has been very positive.”
Last year QB Camp aired a week before the draft. If they keep with that schedule this year, than the show should air
Thursday, April 21st on ESPN. We’ll update the post once we found out exactly when QB Camp will air. The show will air 4.13.2011 at 7:00 pm (eastern) on ESPNU.
